manual updates as follows:
osx10.6.1
java release 1
osx10.6.2
itunes 9.0.1
airport client

everything worked great until the airport update. had several kernal panics and now won't boot past apple spinning wheel startup screen.

oh well, i'm going to start from scratch again, this time, doing everything except the airport updater. hell, it was working fine anyway!

peace.

thanks. this worked: i setup an admin password through system pref/accounts, then went into terminal and did the deed. neat! what a great startup mode! i've got a 20gig partition for windows 7, and 14gigs left for linux.

now i'm jacking around with a new boot loader so i can update to osx10.6.1 and 6.2 (will try manual, individual updates rather than relying on apple's software update "combined" version.

also, software update recommends other "patches" including macbook air firmware. is this necessary?

and do i need to do any java updates?

seems like i'm tempting fate each time i get another apple download as to whether or not it will work.

i should make it known i'm an otherwise VERY HAPPY mac guy. my primary machine is a 2.4ghz macbook pro (pre-unibody), my daughter uses a g4 ibook, my parents use g3 powerbooks, and i just bought a 12" g4 powerbook for $30 to give as a holiday gift (put $160 in it... new hard drive, max ram, battery and power supply).

i'm just jonesing for a netbook with mac os!

@abdi: i think it's save (I'm not really sure though,so don't count on it :P ) In my case, the bootloader is handled by mac osx's boot loader. i'm sorry but i can't really give you useful advice since I didn't try installing mac osx after ubuntu.

@steve: i don't really remember how i did that, but i think you can just set a password for the admin account. from terminal "sudo passwd" then type your new password. If it asks the old password, maybe you can just press enter. Hope it helps.
